Pïrâña is a flamenco/latin group formed by MIT students, all from very different musical backgrounds. Our music is centered on the gravitas of flamenco music but is always spiced with the eclectic sounds of latin, jazz, and even reggae to create a new way of experiencing music. We aim to transcend today's generic genres by combining demanding technicality with a passion for melody and rhythm to create a free-spirited and exotic up-tempo sound.

Our main instruments are two acoustic flamenco guitars, the bongos, cajon (a drum you sit on), and our voices. We hope to add to our worldly sound by incorporating various instruments such as the flute, piano, electric guitar, saxophone, congas, and shakers.

Our original songs range from 8 minute mind-bending instrumentals to smooth and short symphonies to hit songs about everyday life and mysterious banditos. So far we have played at MIT Battle of the Bands and at various MIT parties, performed on WMBR radio, and won the ADP Open Mic Talent Show. We have showcased our music in different countries and so have received offers to play hotels and clubs in Turkey, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

Our goal is to bring this new type of music, heavily influenced by different genres and geographies but still very accessible, to an audience that otherwise would not have a chance to experience it. And of course, to make people dance.

Here are the people who have been playing in Pïrâña:
